📦 Start with the box. Both of them.

Our first rule at RCD is always the same: play the game before drawing a single line. With Darwin's Journey, that meant understanding not just the base game, but how the Oceania expansion changes the setup, which components get swapped out, which get added, and how a typical session flows from box to table.

The Collector's Edition box measures 300 x 300 x 93 mm. The Oceania Founder's Edition box is shallower at 300 x 300 x 54 mm. Same footprint, different depth. That constraint became the foundation of the entire design: whatever we built had to respect each box's internal volume independently, while making it effortless to pull both to the table at once.

🎯 The Collector's Edition: engineering for expansion-first

The Darwin's Journey Collector's Edition insert had to accommodate a significant component list:

• Dual-layer player boards, large, rigid, and needing clean lift-out access
• The Fireland expansion
• All mini expansions: Komodo Dragons, Golden Tent, Darwin Worker, Falmouth Port, Scenarios, Pirates, Animal Companion, Great Ship, Metal Coins, and Soft Plastic Wax Seals

We designed a dedicated tray for the dual-layer boards that holds them flat and lets you lift them out cleanly, no shuffling, no stacking, no hunting. Each mini expansion group gets its own compartment, so setup means opening the tray and placing, not sorting.

1 Tolerances are not suggestions

Card slots throughout the insert are sized for sleeved cards at 80 to 100 microns. If you prefer to play unsleeved, the fit is simply more generous.

We never design for bare cards and hope sleeves fit. That is a shortcut we do not take. Every slot was tested across multiple printers to ensure the tolerances hold regardless of your machine.

🌊 The Oceania Expansion: a companion piece, not an afterthought

The Oceania Founder's Edition insert was designed with one principle in mind: it should feel like it belongs to the same system as the Collector's Edition insert, even though it lives in a separate box.

The shallower box depth (54 mm vs. 93 mm) meant every millimetre counted. We mapped the Oceania component list carefully, new boards, new cards, new tokens, and built a tray layout that keeps everything accessible without wasted vertical space. The result works perfectly for Oceania-only sessions, and integrates seamlessly when you are running the full combined experience.

2 The lid must close. Always.

This is non-negotiable at RCD. Both inserts were validated with the lid fully closed, components inside, nothing protruding, no pressure on the top tray. If the lid does not close, the design goes back to the drawing board.

For Darwin's Journey, this required careful attention to tray stacking order and the height of the dual-layer board compartment. We ran multiple iterations before the geometry was right.

🎨 19 colour options. One system.

Both inserts are available in 19 filament colours: Black, White, Tropical Turquoise, Blue, Spring Leaf Green, Green, Forest Green, Texture Gray, Texture Silver, Yellow, Orange, Red, Peach Pink, Magenta, Interstellar Violet, Beige, Brown, Brown (Non metallic bronze), and Clear.

If you are building a collection, you can match colours across both boxes for a unified shelf presence. STL files are also available for both, if you prefer to print at home.
